El Mayoreo - The Farmer's Market

It's tradition in Armando's family to make a weekly trip to the farmer's market and purchase the produce and food for the upcoming week. It was Armando's chore to go each Saturday morning at 5 a.m. and carry all of the produce home. I looked forward to this trip because I think markets are a great place to capture life and beautiful colors in photography. So, Armando got his friend Sergio to be mine and Lance's bodyguard while he went and made the weekly purchase with his sister, Rosa Maria. It had been a late night the night before, so we didn't go at 5 a.m. (which I am very thankful for!)

At the front entrance of the mercado there were kids selling bags to use to carry produce. They are reusable bags and sturdy so they would not break carrying so many things. What would it be like if we all carried bags to Wal-mart every time we went?

These are the juice-ladies selling fresh fruit juices - don't worry mom, we didn't drink any!

This is the man Armando has bought cheese from for years and years. It's been four years since Armando had been there and the man still recognized him and was happy to see him.

I love capturing the children in the market. Most of them are working with their parents doing something.

I also love the vibrance in color of all of the fruits and vegetables. I wish I could cook with this produce every day.

A young boy taking a rest on his wheelbarrow. There were lots of little boys wheeling things around in these carts.

This young man is selling coconut water. He is breaking the coconut with the back side of the machete.

Here the coconut water is running into the bag.

Then he shreds the coconut and sells it as well.

We all had to try the fresh coconut water.

This young boy was fascinated with the live crabs they were selling.

Isn't he cute!

And this woman's job is to swat flies away from the fresh meat. Not a job I envy.

Pigs feet anyone?

They sell beautiful fresh flowers as well.

Mom - this one is just for you - these are called flowers that never die because you cut them and they never die.

Lance at the end of his market adventure.
